There are so many myths about contraception, It’s hard to separate the truth from false.

So below our team at XO have decided to list 5 commonly misconstrued myths to make sure there are no hiccups along the way.

1. 'You should take a break from the pill time to time' This is a big no-no, taking a break from your pill can obviously increase your chances of pregnancy, if no secondary form of contraception takes place such as the condom. On top of this, taking a break from the pill can really mess up your well-organised cycle. You would have to start again, possibly get confused with dates which could once again, also lead to pregnancy.

2. 'The pull out method is a form of contraception'

Definitely not! it is possible to get pregnant from pre-ejaculation.

3. 'You can't get pregnant whilst on contraception' Even with some methods such as the pill being 99.9 %, you must remember there is still that very unlikely but not impossible 1% chance.

4. 'You need to take the pill the same time every day'

This is only correct if you take the progestin-only pill. If you take the combined pill you don’t have to take the pill the same time every day, however, it is advised to do so as a way to make you remember to take it.

5. 'The pill makes you gain weight' The NHS website states there is no evidence that demonstrates the pill makes you put on weight.

We hope this has cleared up a lot of doubts and uncertainties.
